My wife and I can definitely relate. In the five years we dated before getting married, pursuing purity in our relationship was definitely a real struggle and constant battle. In the first half of our dating relationship, we definitely did it wrong. However, in the second half of our dating years, we did what was said to be the impossible — we went backwards. We found a way to keep our hands off each other and honor God and each other with our bodies. Talk about a freedom and holy intimacy that brought to our relationship. So maybe you are a dating couple who constantly profess with your lips your commitment to sexual purity in your dating relationship, yet with your actions you repeatedly reject its possibility and reality.

For you will hate the one and love the other or you will be devoted to one and despise the other. It all boils down to two things: purity and pre-decision. Purity is absolute. In a relationship outside of marriage, your purity has a ceiling. You can only be pure in your physical affection to a certain point before it demands that you take it to a level reserved only for marriage.
Every single time you compromise purity, you lose a bit of who God created you to be. If a teen is going to do what it takes to guard his or her heart and keep themselves pure then one not only have to pursue purity, but they also have to make some pre-decisions. You have to decide beforehand what your standards are, and not in the midst of lust or emotion.
All this said, a consistent pursuit of a relationship with Christ cannot be understated.

These days, virgins may be embarrassed by their lack of “experience” while non-virgins may feel that it’s too late for them. Men and women of all ages feel compelled to “take their relationships to the next level” – meaning they think it’s time to have sex, not to try on wedding rings. The questions in this landmark work are the most common ones Evert is asked when speaking about the virtue of chastity in hundreds of Catholic, Evangelical Christian, and public schools.
His humorous, friendly, and blunt approach opens hearts and minds to a topic often either rejected out of hand or misunderstood. Teens will find this book a useful guide to starting a relationship, deciding one’s vocation, one day finding a potential spouse, and maintaining purity – without forsaking love. This book will give parents and educators new insights to help teens know the difference between love and lust.
They may even look at their own lives differently, because as Evert explains, chastity is not only for singles; married couples must practice this virtue as well. Paperback 0. Today’s young adult culture puts a lot of attention on the meet-up, hook-up experience. It’s almost considered normal for such relationships if that is the right word to occur. Yet, not all of today’s teens want that type of lifestyle for themselves, Many, in fact, are seeing the value and importance of choosing a higher quality of life and focusing more on their future, their education, and their relationship with God.
Why is purity so important, even today? Serial dating and hookups followed by breakups are very common today, but purity and abstinence until marriage has become far more important. In many ways, more teens are making the decision for purity. But, why is that? There are many reasons. For some, holding to their faith and maintaining God’s standard is very important.
Taking the right course, God’s path, is essential. Not only does it allow for the individual to follow the path that God set for them, but this level of purity and abstinence also helps with the development of a conscience, self-control and respect for themselves and others. When young adults don’t think or act in purity and in God’s will or direction for their lives, they place less value in themselves as image-bearers of God.
And, they place less value in their peers, as well.

My ideas reshaped how many Christians practiced relationships and viewed sex. However, 20 years later, many of them look back with deep regret that they ever read it.
Through the twists and turns of life, two years ago I began a process of re-evaluating the book. This included inviting people to share their stories with me on my website, personal phone calls with readers, and an in-depth study of issues surrounding my book overseen by one of my graduate school professors.
